Pretoria South Africa
Pretoria (now Tshwane) is the administrative capital of South Africa, and lies just 60km North of Johannesburg, in the central province of Gauteng. Pretoria is home to the famous Union Buildings, the seat of the South African government which houses the Presidential Offices. This masterpiece designed by Sir Herbert Baker was built of sandstone and completed in 1913.
The Voortrekker Monument, pictured in the 360 degree virtual tour alongside, which was designed by Gerard Moerdijk, stands as a 40 metre tall landmark on a hill just outside of Pretoria. It was built in honour of the Voortrekkers (pioneers) who left the Cape Colony, where they suffered under British rule, to travel to the interior of the country from 1835 to 1854 on what has come to be known as the Great Trek.
Pretoria is home to many such fascinating destinations and attractions. The Jacaranda City is an educational Mecca, with such institutions as UNISA, The University of Pretoria and the Tshwane University of Technology.
