National Zoological Gardens
The National Zoological Gardens (commonly called Pretoria Zoo) is the largest zoo in South Africa and one of the top zoos in the world.
Established in 1899, the National Zoological Gardens has been contributing to education and conservation for over a century!
The Pretoria Zoo is home to many indigenous and exotic animals, all housed in comfortable, natural enclosures. In addition to the usual terrestrial enclosures, the zoo also boasts a large aquarium and reptile park, as well as a walk-through aviary.
Scattered between the enclosures one finds many information boards and interactive education points that make learning about animals fun for children and their parents. The zoo also caters for families by providing a number of children’s rides and a farmyard, where children can interact with some of the animals.
The total length of the walkways in the zoo are over 6km, so be sure to bring comfortable walking shoes! For the less energetic among us, golf carts can be hired. There is also a cable car that takes visitors to the top of the zoo, over a number of enclosures including the bears’ and hippos’ enclosures.
The zoo boasts 6 restaurants and venues available for event hire, including a chapel and honeymoon suite, all set in a natural and memorable setting.
The Pretoria Zoo is open 365 days a year, from 8:30 to 17:30.
To contribute to the zoo’s conservation programs, why not consider joining the Friends of the Zoo Society or becoming part of the animal adoption scheme.
